Heritage Sports Day turned out to be a fabulous and fun day for children in Year 6 classes from the town centre collaboration schools in Barnsley.
Horizon Advanced Learning Centre provided sports leaders to enable the children to enjoy exciting sporting events in safety.
There was an exciting 'come and try' area where children got a flavour of sports from our past. Races included Hare and Hounds, where children ran the cross country course in pusuit of their classmates, Sack & Coal and Egg & Spoon. Spectators were welcome and came along to encourage the participants as they competed against their 'rival' schools.
A world record attempt took place and we are awaiting confirmation from Guiness World records to see if our attempt at the "Burpee" World Record was successful.
To round off the day the school teams competed for the Town Centre Schools Championship Trophies in 4 x 400m relay and 4 x 100m relay, where some great performances were witnessed. Winners were Summer Lane, Dodworth Keresforth and Wilthorpe.
Many children who took part in the day will have parents and grandparents who have competed in the Barnsley Schools Sports Day in the past and we are keen to record memories of their achievements.
Athletics competitions have been a part of the Shaw Lane scene for almost 150 years. The first meeting took place in 1867 and the programme of the 20th meeting in 1887 is reproduced above courtesy of the Barnsley Archives and Museums Service.
